Music Theory for Dancers
Why do I need to know Music theory?
Because music is another partner we need to understand and empathize with.
Music theory isn’t about being a musician. It’s just understanding what’s happening in the song so we can make clearer choices. When we don’t understand the music, we end up reacting late, guessing, or dancing on autopilot. When we do understand it, everything feels easier:
We know where we are in the song
We know what’s coming next
We know why something feels good or awkward
I describe music theory as the vehicle for our dance.
Technique gives us the tools.
But music tells us where to go.
When we can hear the structure, the groove, the accents, and the “big moments,” we stop feeling like we’re just doing moves to a beat — and we start actually dancing the song.
This class is about making that feel natural and accessible, so you can hear more, respond faster, and feel more confident in your choices.
