Frequently asked questions.

Do I need any dance experience to join?

Not at all! Many of our students started as complete beginners with no prior dance background. Our beginner West Coast Swing classes in NYC are designed to guide you step by step, in a friendly and supportive environment. You don’t need a partner or fancy shoes — just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing (WCS) is a versatile partner dance that can be done to a wide variety of music — from blues and R&B to pop and contemporary hits. It’s known for its smooth style, connection, and creativity, which makes it perfect for social dancing and personal expression.

How do I get started?

It’s easy — just sign up for a beginner-friendly class, show up with comfortable shoes, and let us guide you. You’ll be dancing from your very first day, and our instructors + community will make sure you feel supported.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No partner needed! We rotate throughout class so you get the chance to dance with many people. This helps you learn faster, meet new friends, and feel the energy of the community.

What should I wear or bring?

To help maintain a comfortable and respectful environment for everyone, we ask that students follow these attire guidelines when attending classes, practices, and social dancing at The Platform:

• Clothing should provide full coverage of undergarments and private areas.
• Streetwear, athletic wear, or dancewear are all welcome.
• Shirts or tops are required for all participants.
• Shorts, skirts, leggings, or pants are all acceptable as long as they provide appropriate coverage while moving.
• Clothing should be clean and suitable for close partner dancing.

Because West Coast Swing involves close connection and shared space, attire similar to what you would wear to a dance class, fitness class, or social dance event is expected. The Platform reserves the right to ask anyone to adjust their attire if it does not meet these guidelines.

Are classes only for beginners?

We have classes for every level, from absolute beginners to advanced dancers preparing for competitions. Beginners can start with our Fundamentals classes or Sunday beginner workshop, while more experienced dancers can dive into Level 2 Small Batch classes (Strategy Line, Blue Line) or advanced workshops.

How diverse is the community?

The Platform’s community is wonderfully diverse. Our students range in age, background, and experience — from first-time dancers to seasoned competitors. Whether you’re here to pick up a fun hobby, meet new people, or grow your dancing seriously, you’ll feel at home.

Where are classes held?

  • Thursdays → Small Batch Classes at our FiDi studio.

  • Sundays → Workshops + Sundown Swing Social at The Loft in Chinatown.

What is the Sundown Swing Social?

Every Sunday after workshops, we host Sundown Swing, a welcoming social dance where you can practice what you’ve learned and dance with the NYC West Coast Swing community. The night often ends with a family-style dinner in Chinatown — one of our favorite traditions.

How much do classes cost?

  • Group Classes: $40 per class

  • Social Dancing: $15–20 depending on class attendance

  • Private Lessons: Packages and Spot Lessons available (see pricing page)
